Dance Forms

Acrobatics -

A routine that consists of tumbling skills requiring balance, strength and/or flexibility. Controlled moves such as walkovers, limbers, handstands, handsprings, chest rolls, etc. are included but should also contain dance moves, steps and choreography. Acrobatic routines should contain a minimum of 50% dance.

Ballet -

A routine that expresses a form of classical dance demanding highly developed technique, grace and precision executed according to specific gestures and flowing patterns. Ballet slippers must be worn.

Jazz -

A routine consisting of energetic dance styles using body isolations and varied rhythmic accents. The routine should not contain gymnastic or acrobatic tricks. General lifts are allowed.

Contemporary/Modern -

A routine that resembles modern art and music in being experimental and breaking from tradition. A style of theatrical dancing where movements are expressive of feelings.

Lyrical -

A routine that uses motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical routine uses movements that attempts to show the meaning of the music. Lyrical routines are very passionate and emotional and portray emotions such as love and tell stories through movements.

Musical Theatre -

A routine that combines music, songs, spoken dialogue and dance. The emotional content of the piece (humour, love, anger, etc.) as well as the story itself is communicated through words, music, movement and technical aspectsAny form of dance can be used and lip-syncing is allowed.

Open -

A routine that does not fall under any other dance category or a routine that combines two or more dance categories. If the routine consists of six (6) or more acrobatic tricks, it should be entered in the Acrobatic category.

Hip Hop -

A routine that focuses on street style dance. Loose, relaxed and fun incorporating street dance with popular, mainstream music. Styles associated with hip hop include breakdance, popping and locking and krumping.

Tap -

A routine that uses the precise rhythmical patterns of foot movement and audible foot tapping. The routine must consist primarily of tap techniques and tap sounds cannot be present in music used.

Production -

A routine that consists of a minimum of fifteen (15) dancers incorporating any style of dance but must have a theme or story portrayed throughout the performance. The routine can include acrobatic moves.
